Permission granted to spend some money!!!!

May 20, 2022

I am going to give you permission to spend some money!!

I used to think $500 was a lot to spend on a bike.  True story.  My first 'real' mountain bike was purchased for $450 ( because my budget was $500).  I set my budget at that amount for a couple of reasons.  The first reason was that I was a new college graduate, living in the Bay Area of California, and my wife and I were saving heavily for a down payment.  The second ( and main reason) was that I didn't see the purchase as an investment.  I saw it as an expense.   There is a very big difference.  With an expense, the money is gone.  Investment is something that gives you MORE than what you initially put into the transaction.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Here is my point: If that bike is used frequently then the results will be worth WAY more than $500.  Think of all the amazingly positive things that occur when you exercise on that mountain bike:

  • Better Cardiovascular health
  • Better insulin regulation and sensitivity
  • Better muscular balance and joint health
  • Allows my subconscious brain to work on complex problems
  • Exposure to nature and its calming influence and beauty
  • Vitamin D exposure for the immune system and sleep optimization
  • Stress hormone regulation ( cortisol and adrenaline reset)
  • Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor increase ( miracle growth for the brain)
  • More alertness and focus post-workout

The List continues but you get the point.  IF that $500 bike is what it takes to work out consistently, it is worth EVERY PENNY and so much more!  How much more is it worth?  I would argue that it is almost hard to put a price tag that is too high. ( though at some dollar amount the bike is good enough to complete the objective).

Interesting statistic:

"People with diagnosed diabetes incur average medical expenditures of $16,752 per year"- American Diabetes Association.  So if a bike, or a pair of running shoes, or a paddleboard anchors us to a healthy lifestyle, and helps prevent the 'lifestyle' diseases in your life, then I give you permission to spend some serious money on those items.  That is why spending $7000 on a bike is not too much.  I love cycling and having the equipment that keeps me excited to ride and live in a healthy way is worth top dollar!

It is springtime.  Time to enjoy the renewing environment of the outdoors.  Now is the time to become your own REI commercial.  Invest some money into your health and wellness today.  Your future self will thank you!

Make it a great weekend!  Invest, Invest, Invest!
